The Stove Industry Association (SIA) has sought urgent clarification from the Scottish Government in relation to what the Association considers to be ambiguity and a lack of consistency within the definition of terms in the New Build Heat Standard (6.11 Heating and hot water – direct emission heating system) which came into force on 1st April 2024

Particulate emissions from “domestic combustion” fell between 2021 and 2022 with a 3.9% reduction in PM10 and a 4% reduction PM2.5 from “domestic combustion”. The latest data also shows that PM2.5 emissions from the domestic use of wood fuel specifically fell by 2.7%.

The latest Defra data covers the same period in which stove sales, as reported by SIA manufacturing members (representative of approximately 80% of total UK sales), hit a record high.

Clean Air Night 2024 (Wednesday 24th Jan) is being focused on what campaigners are calling the “uncomfortable truth about wood burning” and follows a prolonged period this winter where consumers have been targeted by an intense and very well-funded series of anti-burning messages by the likes of Mums for Lungs, London Wood Burning Project and Global Action Plan / Clean Air Hub.
The uncomfortable truth is that these campaigns rely on flawed data and sweeping generalisations. So, this Clean Air Night we urge consumers to get both sides of the story as we look at some of the anti-burning adverts you may have seen recently, shedding light on why they are misleading, ambiguous and, in some cases, untrue.

The Stove Industry Association (SIA) has welcomed the publication today of the Office for Environmental Protection’s Annual Progress Report and its scrutiny of the government’s progress towards legally binding environmental targets.

The report notes that “outdoor air quality in the UK has improved significantly over the past 50 years” which is greatly encouraging and has been brought about by a range of measures including sector regulation and technological advances.
